Scope and Content Note

The Albert J. Ross Photographs consist of negatives, copies of original negative envelopes, and, for a very limited number of images, prints. A small number of postcards are included as well. These materials date from 1907 to 1966 with the bulk of images falling in the range of 1907 to around 1930.

The collection contains scenes of everyday life, numerous scenes of people picnicking at various outdoor locations, and views of work including beekeeping, construction, and farming. The collection consists of views of many Arizona towns and cities including Buckeye, Glendale, Flagstaff, Phoenix, Prescott, and Tempe. El Paso, Texas; Lima, Ohio; and places in Tennessee are also featured.

Items of note include early views of Roosevelt Dam and the Roosevelt or Government Road [Apache Trail?]. Many views of other Arizona dams such as Cave Creek, Granite Reef, Horse Mesa, Hoover or Boulder, and Wadell are also found within the collection. Other places featured include the Bradshaw Mountains, Camelback Mountain, Mount Lemmon, the Grand Canyon, and the White Tank Mountains. Finally, Arizona schools such as Emerson, Monroe, Palo Verde, and Thayer are also included.

Biographical Note

Albert James Ross, an amateur photographer, was born September 7, 1883. He married Ida Mae McKnight and the couple had one son, Robert James Ross (1913-1999). A. J. Ross worked as a beekeeper and farmer in Buckeye, Arizona until around 1918. He then moved to Phoenix, Arizona and worked as a custodian briefly at the Monroe School and primarily at the Emerson School, both in Phoenix, until his retirement around 1960. Ross died in Arizona in April of 1970.

Abstract

A small number of postcards are included as well. These materials date from 1907 to 1966 with the bulk of images falling in the range of 1907 to around 1930.
