Scope and Content Note
This collection houses nineteen photographs showing Tempe, Arizona in the early 1900s. Among the subjects depicted are Arizona State University's Old Main, the Hayden Flour Mill, the Santa Fe railroad bridge, Mill Avenue, agricultural enterprises (including dates, oranges, wheat, and ostriches), business enterprises (including the Casa Loma Hotel and the Pacific Creamery), Mill Avenue, and the Haigler family. The majority of photographs 1/OV1 through 17/OV1 were clipped from an unidentified publication and pasted onto pages to form a scrapbook; the remainder appear to be Ruby Wood's personal photographs.

Biographical Note
Ruby Olive Haigler was born to James Filmore Haigler (1855-1912) and Laura Ann (Miller) Haigler Mason (1862-1949) in Tempe, Arizona on June 28, 1894. She was one of eight children, including Charles Alvin (1879-1954), Albert Chester (1883-1964), Carrie B. (Haigler) Gill (1887-1967), Pearl Edith (Haigler) Lucero (1892-1918), and Eva E. (1896-). Ruby Haigler graduated from Tempe Normal School and obtained her First Grade Teaching Certificate in 1914. She married Edward Stanley Wood (1894-1954) on June 1, 1915 and the couple had six children, Stanley Edward (1917-2014), Mildred Louise (Wood) Marchi (1920-), John Haigler (1922-2008), Marjorie Lucille (Wood) Law (1923-2000), Homer Glen (1927-), and Robert Mason (1931-1989). Ruby Wood returned to teaching in 1933, working first in the Adult School at Guadalupe (1933-1934) and then at the rural school under the Federal Emergency Relief Administration's Emergency Educational Programs of Arizona (1934-1935). She began teaching at Guadalupe Elementary School in 1937, where she remained until her retirement in 1974. Ruby Wood died in Phoenix on March 21, 1982.
