Scope and Content Note

The Christopher Czajka Papers, 1994-1996, are comprised of play typescript drafts some with revisions, handwritten notes, correspondence, periodical and newspaper articles, promotional fliers, press releases, photographs and ephemera. The majority of the collection documents the development and associated production of The Cottingley Caper, a play written while Czajka was a Theatre for Youth graduate student at Arizona State University. The materials include numerous drafts of this play, promotional fliers, press releases for readings and performances, publicity photographs mounted on foam board, cutouts of fairies mounted on foam board, and research articles about an historical event with faked fairies and elves photographs, which inspired the play. The remainder of the papers consists of two other one act play typescripts written by Czajka and two photographs of Czajka at Northwestern University.

Biographical Note

Christopher Czajka received his undergraduate degree in theatre from Northwestern University and his M.F.A. in Theatre for Youth from Arizona State University (ASU) in 1997. While at ASU, he wrote a play titled The Cottingley Caper that received a staged reading. This play was further developed at the New York University New Plays for Young Audiences play reading series in June 1999. It was also a semi-finalist at the Bonderman Playwriting for Youth National Symposium in Indianapolis. His one act play, Its Not Funny, Its My Life, was featured in the Arizona Theatre Company's Genesis Project.

After graduation Czajka worked for several years as the Associate Director of Education at the New Victory Theatre in New York City. Following this he went to work for PBS, where he served as: the Educational Consultant for the television series Texas Ranch House and for Thirteen/WNETs hands-on history series Colonial House and Frontier House, also serving as Historical Consultant for the latter. He is the Senior Director of the LAB@Thirteen, which creates, supervises and executes community and educational outreach initiatives for Thirteen/WNETs broadcast and online productions. He has also developed web-based resources for the PBS series African-American Lives, Broadway: The American Musical, and Slavery and the Making of America.

Abstract

The Christopher Czajka Papers, 1.0 linear foot, contain the papers of Christopher Czajka, playwright and educational television consultant and director, from 1994 through 1996. The majority of the collection documents the development and associated productions of The Cottingley Caper, a play written while Czajka was a Theatre for Youth graduate student at Arizona State University. The remainder of the papers consists of two other one act play typescripts by Czajka and two photographs of Czajka.

Processing Note

This collection was processed as part of a NHPRC Archives-Basic Projects-Basic Processing grant, which limits processing to the series and subseries level when needed and does not allow the creation of file or folder listings. The collection was processed by Anna Uremovich, NHPRC Project Archivist, Child Drama Collection, in July 2009.
