Biographical Note

Louis Henry Chalmers, Phoenix attorney and territorial legislator, was born to Clark and Hattie (Jenkins) Chalmers in Jamestown, Ohio on January 13, 1861. His father died shortly after his birth and he moved to Albion, Iowa with his mother when he was four years old. Chalmers was raised in the Cedar Falls Soldiers' Home and attended the public grade schools. He returned to Jamestown when he was sixteen years old and graduated high school in that town. Chalmers purchased Waverly, a Republican newspaper in Pike County, Ohio, in 1881 and graduated from Cincinnati Law School in 1884.

After his graduation, Chalmers relocated to Phoenix, where he established Chalmers and Kent. This firm represented the Phoenix National Bank, Cobre Grande Copper Company, and the Santa Fe, Phoenix and Prescott Railroad Company. Chalmers also served as Phoenix City Attorney and Maricopa County representative to the 16th Territorial Legislature.

Chalmers married Laura E. Coates (1867-1953) on January 13, 1891 in Phoenix and the couple had at least two children, Raima and Louis James (1892-1945). Louis H. Chalmers died in 1934.
