Biographical Note

James Lee Felton was born to Sylvanus and Sophronia (Wright) Felton in Dorr, Michigan on November 10, 1874. He earned his A.B. (1904) from Olivet College and his A.M. from the University of Chicago in addition to completing graduate study at the University of California and the University of London. He began his career as a teacher in the Michigan public schools and went on to serve as a high school principal in Olivet, Michigan; to teach high school English in Burlington, Iowa and Butte, Montana; and to head the Ferris Institute's English department before coming to the Tempe Normal School as the Head of the English Department in 1910. Felton served as sponsor for the Normal's Zeitetic Club beginning in 1911. In addition to his work at the Normal, Felton served as Mayor of Tempe from 1926 to 1928. He died suddenly of heart disease at his home in Tempe on April 3, 1932 and is buried in Tempe's Double Butte Cemetery.

Felton married May Nellie Brown (1876-1955) in Moline, Michigan on August 30, 1904 and the couple had three children: James Brown (1906-2002), Cornelius Conway (1909-1991), and Helen Cordelia (Felton) Lackman (1910-1994).
