This collection houses seventeen photographs, primarily silver gelatin, showing Watson Pickrell and his family, the Granite Reef Dam and gatehouse, a concrete bridge over the Salt River in South Phoenix, and a billboard advertising the Palmcroft Addition in Phoenix.

Biographical Note

William Watson Pickrell was born in Mechanicsburg, Illinois on October 4, 1853. He married Frances Ulen (1862-1903) on October 22, 1888 and the couple had four children: Charles Ulen (1892-1962), William Watson (1894-1965), Dorothy Frances (1896-1971), and Kenneth Patrick (1899-1972). The family settled in Tempe in 1892, where Watson Pickrell was a member of the Board of Regents of the Tempe Normal School and served in the Territorial Legislature from 1905 to 1907. Watson Pickrell died on September 6, 1907 and is buried in Tempe's Double Butte Cemetery.

Watson Pickrell's brother William Smith Pickrell (1851-1924) also moved to the Arizona Territory with his wife, Georgiana (Keith) Pickrell (1859-1948), and children, John Keith (1885-1934), Abbie Beatrice (Pickrell) Isham (1887-1980), and William Smith Jr. (1896-1980).
