Biographical Note

Harry E. Mitchell was born to Harry Casey and Irene Gladys (Childres) Mitchell in Phoenix, Arizona on July 18, 1940. He graduated from Tempe High School in 1958 and went on to earn his B.A. (1962) and M.P.A. (1980) from Arizona State University. He married Marianne Prevratil on May 5, 1962 and the couple had two children. Mitchell taught high school government and economics and served on the Tempe City Council (1970-1978) before being elected Mayor of Tempe (1978-1996). He was elected to the Arizona State Senate in 1998 and to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat in 2006. While serving as a Representative Mitchell advocated for fiscal conservatism, prioritized veterans' affairs, and involved himself in such issues as green collar industries and alternative energy. He won reelection in 2008 but was unsuccessful in his 2010 campaign.
