Scope and Content Note
The Carol Ruppé Mesquakie Collection contains correspondence, news clippings, ephemera, notes and diary entries, and photographs. The material dates from 1953 to 1968 and documents Carol Ruppé's time with the Mesquakie Indians in Tama, Iowa.
The correspondence consists of Christmas cards and letters from members of the Mesquakie community. The ephemera includes a typescript copy of a paper written by Reynold Ruppé and Fred Gearing entitled Iowa's Mesquakie Indians are Here to Stay. The notes and diary entries include descriptions of daily activities and observations of the role of women in the Mesquakie community. The photographs include pictures of young children, Carol Ruppé's friend Chloe Ann, the building of a wickiup, and a Pow Wow. See Appendix I for complete list of photographs.
