Historical Note
Stageworks, a community theatre for young audiences and their families, was formed by a group of parents in 1976 as Mesa Children's Theatre in Mesa, Arizona. The name was changed to Mesa Youtheatre when it became part of Mesa's Park and Recreation Division. In 2005 the name was changed to Stageworks and the company became part of the operations of the new Mesa Arts Center. The company produces three plays per season in this Center's 152-seat theatre and beginning in the 2008-2009 season also at Phoenix's Herberger Theatre Center. Each show is performed during the week for in-school classes who are bused to the performance site and on weekends for the general public.
Jennifer Akridge, an Arizona State University M.F.A. in Theatre for Youth graduate, joined the company in 1983 and became the Artistic Director and Theatre Coordinator in 1987. In 2005 her title was changed to Arts Education Supervisor for the Mesa Arts Center, overseeing Stageworks' productions, artistic direction, budget and arts education classes. Akridge received the following awards for her work with this company: Artist of the Year in Mesa, 1989; the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE) Youth Theatre Director of the Year Award, 1990; and an Arizoni award for her Outstanding Contribution to Theatre in Arizona, 2001.
Stageworks' productions are designed, written and directed by theatre professionals. It is noted for premiering and/or developing multiple plays by nationally known playwright Brian Kral. The performers are young people and adults from the community. Stageworks also offers performances by its dance and improvisational theater troupes.
Performing arts education programs for young people have always been an important part of Stageworks, with summer all-day arts camps and after school and Saturday classes in acting, creative drama, improvisation, camera work, directing, movement, stage combat, dance and playwriting. Mesa Arts Center employs three full time and multiple part-time teachers in its performing arts section. To enhance the theatrical experience, Stageworks offers hands-on activities for young people and their families prior to the show; study guides for educators and parents; and question and answer sessions with actors following most performances.
Stageworks' mission is to inspire and instill a love of theatre in people of all ages. It produces plays that embrace the youthful spirit and awaken the child in all of us. Using students and adults in acting roles, the plays celebrate young people and their life journey.
