Biographical Note

Dina Rees Evans (Doc), high school educator, theatre administrator and children's theatre director was born on June 19, 1891 in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from high school in Racine, Wisconsin in 1908. She received: her B.A. from the University of South Dakota in 1913; her M.A. in 1929 and her Ph.D. degree in 1931 from the University of Iowa. Her dissertation, Psychological Growth of High School Students through Dramatic Art discussed the use of drama to help physically and psychologically troubled students. Her resume lists her as the first person in the United States to earn a PhD in dramatic arts for secondary education.

She began her teaching career in 1913 in Parker, South Dakota. She later taught English and directed The Heights Players at Heights High School in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, from 1933-1958. Students she inspired who went on to successful careers in the theatre, include: Hal Holbrook and Dom DeLuise. In 1976 the Dina Rees Evans Center for Performing Arts was dedicated at this school.

In the 1930s she was the driving force behind the creation and building of the Cain Park Theatre, an open-air summer theatre owned and operated by the City of Cleveland Heights. Evans served as the Director from 1938 until she retired in 1958. The season included performances for adults and classes and plays for children. In 1950 she retired as director of the adult theatre, but continued as the director of the Cain Park Creative Playshop, a theatre school focusing on creative dramatics but also including training in puppetry, music, art, and dance. In 1951 she established the Cain Park Theatre School and Theatre with educational programs for children and children's theatre. During the 1940s and 1950s, many theatre for youth college professors and graduate students, such as Mary Jane Evans, Barbara McIntyre, Nancy Swortzell and Kenneth Graham, taught there in the summer. Many professional actors, such as Pernell Roberts and Ann B. Davis got early theatrical experience at Cain Park. Evans was honored with the theatre's Founders Award at its fiftieth anniversary celebration in 1988. A year later the renovated amphitheater was dedicated to her memory.

Evans was one of the founding members of the American Educational Theatre Association (AETA), later known as the American Theatre Association (ATA) and was its fourth President. She was present at the luncheon that established the Children's Theatre Conference (CTC) and helped establish the Secondary School Theatre Conference (SSTC). After Evans' retirement, she became actively involved in the American Theatre Association (ATA) Committee on Theatre for Retired Persons. She was a charter member of the Teachers of Speech, now known as the Speech Communication Association.

Upon her retirement, she moved to Youngtown, Arizona, where she met and married Harvey Shaw. She became widowed at age 85. She passed away on January 29, 1989 at the age of 97.
