Scope and Content Note
The Ann Stahlman Hill Papers document the career of this Nashville-based set and costume designer, writer, arts administrator, and arts in education advocate's mostly volunteer work in theatre for young audiences and arts education from 1956 through 2014. Included are: speeches, articles by and about Hill, business correspondence, and theatre for youth organizational records. It is divided into the following six series: Biographical; Speeches; Articles; Theatre Associations' Work; Arts Resources; and Oversized Materials.
Series I: Biographical (Box 1), dating from 1962-2014, provides a quick review of Ann Hill's career through resumes and articles written about her and descriptions of awards presented to her. Included are: resumes, biographies, business and personal correspondence, newspaper and journal articles, invitations, award certificates and introductions, awards programs, and congratulatory notes. Bulk dates are 1962-1979, 1982, 1989, 1995, and 2014.
Series II: Speeches (Box 2), mostly undated and 1956-1976, contains speeches presented locally in Tennessee and nationally at theatre conferences. Subjects include the history of Nashville Children's Theatre, volunteerism, new directions in children's theatre and creative drama, the American College Theatre Festival, arts education, European children's theatre, creativity, and children's theatre. Included are: handwritten notes and speech typescripts, most with revisions. Of note are her citation for induction of Paul Kozelka into the American College of Theatre Fellows and speeches delivered to the American Theatre Association and the Children's Theatre Association of America. Bulk dates are 1956-1962 and 1970-1976.
Series III: Articles (Box 3), dating from 1959-1980, contains newspaper and some journal articles written by Ann Hill, which include book reviews, a forward to the play Aesop's Fallibles, Italian trip travel narratives, and a tour of the National Theatre in London. Also included are her make-up and costume designs and production materials and photographs of Noye's Fludde presented in Nashville on October 23, 1966. Included are: newspaper articles, handwritten notes, journal articles, programs, a rehearsal schedule, costume and make-up renderings with notes, photographs, a forward to a play, and a letter. Of note are: an article in Southern Theatre from the then SETC President Ann Hill, descriptions of plays at the American College Theatre Festival in 1969, and a report on a two-week joint Romanian-United States conference on Arts in Education. Bulk dates are 1959, 1963, 1966-1976, and 1980.
Series IV: Theatre Associations' Work, dating from 1959-1981, documents Ann Hill's work for national, regional, Tennessee, and international adult and children's theatre and arts education organizations. This series is arranged alphabetically by the name of the organization as follows: the American Educational Theatre Association (AETA) later known as the American Theatre Association (ATA), and the Children's Theatre Conference (CTC) later known as the Children's Theatre Association of America (CTAA) (Box 4); International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People (ASSITEJ) (Box 5); and the Children's Theatre Foundation of America, the College of Fellows of the American Theatre, Nashville Children's Theatre, Southeastern Theatre Conference, Tennessee Alliance for Arts Education, Tennessee Theatre Association, White House Conference on Children and Youth (Box 6). Included are: correspondence, handwritten notes, newspaper articles, journals, photographs, newsletters, a telegram, postcards, conference badges, conference programs, advertisements, reports, and conference registration flyers. Of note are: speeches, brochures, proposals, programs, and correspondence describing the history of Nashville Children's Theatre and the dedication of one of its theatres to Ann Stahlman Hill. Also of note are: correspondence and articles about Ann Hill's years as head of the American Theatre Association (ATA) and the Children's Theatre Conference (CTC), later known as the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE).
Series V: Arts Resources (Box 7), mostly undated, and 1963-1983, contains print items that Ann Hill accumulated at conferences and workshops, and articles saved as resource materials. Included are: essay typescripts, articles on publishing, drama activities, speeches, a press kit, a booklet, a creative drama curriculum, newspaper articles, and flyers. Of note is: a National Endowment for the Arts book on hiring arts executives. Bulk dates are 1963-1969, 1972, and 1983.
Series VI: Oversized Materials (Box 8), dated 1962-1979, contains materials too large to be housed in the previous document boxes. A document removal form has been placed in the appropriate folders directing patrons to materials in this oversize box.
