Andrea G. Mauk Papers

 Collection
Identifier: MSS-124

Scope and Content Note

The Andrea G. Mauk Papers consist of printed matter, sketches, and scrapbooks showing some of the incidents surrounding the Phelps Dodge Copper strike of 1983. A variety of literature produced by the United Steelworkers of America is present, including reports revealing the financial status of Phelps Dodge; an organizational brochure by the folk singer Si Kahn; publications supporting the striking miners; and various newsletters printed by the Steelworkers Union Local 616. A 50th anniversary calendar from the union provides historical background on the activities of the United Steelworkers of America.

Articles compiled from various news sources, including Arizona newspapers, provide a report of the events that occurred during the strike. Papers and news releases sent out in response to the union's demands, copies of letters sent to striking miners by Phelps Dodge clarifying the company hiring policy regarding replacement workers, and a typewritten chronology of the events that led up to the strike are included. A separate file contains articles on the devastating flood that occurred in Clifton during October of 1983.

A separate box contains Mauk's original sketches of some of Clifton's residents who participated in the strike, including the union's chief negotiator Angel Chacon Rodriguez, Alice Miller and her son, and a sketch of the landscape surrounding the mines.
