Scope and Content Note

Series I: Administrative houses grant proposals to the Arizona Humanities Council and reflects the work of the Committee for Preservation of Mexican American Oral History in its planning of the project and its design of and publicity for the traveling exhibit.

Series II: Oral Histories includes interview questions, recordings, and transcripts of eleven interviews with Miami, Arizona residents by Rita Magdaleno. Interviewees discuss such themes as family histories, immigration, school segregation, labor unions, the Great Depression, racism, religion, copper mining, and work. Interview questions and oral history release forms signed by the interviewees are also included.

Series III: Biographical Data Questionnaire provides biographical sketches of the individuals who agreed to be interviewed for the project. The questionnaires were completed by the interviewees.

Series IV: Family Histories includes biographical and genealogical information about the Mexican American families whose lives are linked with the history of Miami, Arizona.

Series V: Rita Magdaleno: Stories includes original and published writings of the Tucson author and poet. Many of the stories are about the Andres and Maria Magdaleno family of Miami, Arizona. Themes like Mexican immigration, the death of a patriarch in a mine accident, copper strikes, and family struggles are reflected in these stories.

Series VI: Miscellaneous includes residents' recollections of life in Miami, Arizona and historical artifacts.

Series VII: Photographs includes images of Mexican American families, Miami town landmarks, copper mining scenes, community events, Mexican organizations, the Pinal Cemetery, the Miami Town Park, and Miami street scenes, among others. Photographs date from 1916 to 1995.

Biographical Note

Tucson poet and writer Rita Magdaleno obtained a grant in 1994 from the Arizona Humanities Council to begin a project entitled Miami: Oral History of an Arizona Mining Town. Magdaleno conducted interviews with residents of Miami, Arizona in order to document the history of Mexican Americans in the community. In 1995, she received additional funding from the Arizona Humanities Council and the Arizona Commission on the Arts, Tucson-Pima Arts Council, to create a traveling photograph exhibit and accompanying catalog called Cuentos y Memorias: Miami, Arizona, 1900-1950s. The photograph exhibit is housed in the Miami Memorial Library in Miami, Arizona.

Abstract

This collection consists of materials created by various grant projects conducted by Rita Magdaleno on the history of Miami, Arizona. Among these materials are oral histories, photographs, and administrative records for the project Cuentos y Memorias: Miami, Arizona, 1900-1950s.
