Blair Baca Interview, Undated
Scope and Content Note
The Alice Miller (1944-1991) Papers, 1983-1988 are comprised of legal documents, printed matter and correspondence extending from 1983-1988 and concerning the civil case of United Steelworkers of America versus the Phelps Dodge Corporation. The collection has been divided into three series: trial papers; United Steelworkers of America literature; and miscellaneous.
The collection details the events surrounding the trail from the proposal of the suit filed against Phelps Dodge for the use of undue force in breaking up a protest rally by striking workers to the judge's decision on the case. Included are interviews with Alice Miller and another plaintiff, Blair Baca, containing their accounts of the events surrounding the altercation. Among other documents in the collection are correspondence sent by the lawyers representing the case; a collection of legal documents; a series of newsletters informing the plaintiffs of events surrounding the suit; and a listing of discriminatory acts perpetrated against the strikers by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The United Steelworkers of America (USWA) files contain an in-depth report of the events that occurred on June 30, 1984, which eventually led up to the suit. Among the literature published by the USWA is a newsletter that contains information on further abuses by the management of Phelps Dodge during the strike. Other files contain various Union leaflets on the strike and a collection of articles from Arizona newspapers about the union's suit against Phelps Dodge. The last part of the collection consists of a copy of Alice Miller's obituary and her biography written by Andrea G. Mauk.
