Scope and Content Note
This collection houses annual reports, statistical reports, faculty information, correspondence, committee records, and other materials documenting William W. Phillips's American history research and Arizona State University's Department of History and College of Liberal Arts. Among the subjects discussed are North Dakota history; constitutional history; such historical figures as Martin Luther, Abraham Lincoln, Asle Gronna, Benjamin Franklin Daniels, and Barry Goldwater; Professor Morris Starsky's termination; and the centennial of the College of Liberal Arts. Biographical Note
Historian William Weiland Phillips was born to Neptune Seraphine and Lulu Mae (Christian) Phillips in Grand Forks, North Dakota on August 4, 1925. He married Marlene Lillian March (1931-) in 1949. Phillips earned his Bachelor of Philosophy (1951) and Master of Arts (1952) from the University of North Dakota and his PhD from the University of Missouri (1958). He began his career as an Assistant Professor of History at North Dakota State Teachers College in Minot in 1955, where he remained until coming to Arizona State University as an Associate Professor of History in 1965. Phillips retired from ASU on July 4, 1987.
