Biographical Note
Civil engineer and academic administrator Mathew Joseph Betz III was born to Mathew Joseph Betz, Jr. (1905-1962) and Frances (Fleming) Betz (1896-1978) in Chicago, Illinois on January 27, 1932. He earned his B.Sc. (1955) and M.Sc. (1956) at Northwestern University and was the first to be selected for an exchange program between Northwestern and Sudan's University of Khartoum in 1956-1957. Betz earned his Ph.D. from Northwestern in 1961 and began his professional career at Arizona State University in the same year. During his time at ASU, Betz established graduate programs in transportation engineering and conducted research in Sudan. He later served as the Associate Dean of the Graduate College and worked in the Academic Vice President's/Vice Provost's office before founding the Center for Advanced Research in Transportation. Betz became Vice Provost for Planning in 1988 and held that position until his retirement in 1993.
