Scope and Content Note
This collection houses clippings, publications, programs, scrapbooks, correspondence, speeches, notes, photographs, and other materials documenting KAET-TV (Channel 8), Arizona State College at Tempe's transition to Arizona State University, Kathryn Gammage's work with the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women, and the completion and opening of Gammage Auditorium. Also included are correspondence, clippings, and other materials documenting Kathryn Gammage's personal affairs. This collection has not been processed in full and can be viewed only by appointment. Biographical Note
Kathryn Rebecca Kay
Klink was born to Harvey Calvin and Hariette Chatrine Hattie
(Hoffsis) Klink in Bucyrus, Ohio on September 14, 1915. She graduated from Bucyrus High School as valedictorian in 1933 and went on to earn a B.A. from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio in 1937 and an M.S. in Education from Syracuse University in 1939. She also completed graduate work at Northwestern University. Klink began her professional career as a member of the Dean of Women's staff at Kent State University (1939-1941) and went on to serve as a Junior Dean at Arizona State College in Flagstaff (1941-1943), as a Program Director for the USO (1943-1944), and as Dean of Women and Associate Professor of Education at Lake Forest College (1944-1949). Kathryn Klink married Grady Gammage (1892-1959) in 1949 and the couple had one son, Grady Gammage Jr., in 1951.
After Grady Gammage's death, Kathryn Gammage continued her involvement with the ASU community. She took responsibility for gifts and grants made to ASU and it has been said that she secured many of the major private gifts made at that time. Gammage also founded the Friends of Music, the History Associates, the ASU Foundation, the Friends of Channel 8, and the ASU Library Associates in addition to serving on many ASU commissions discussing women's' issues. The First Lady
of ASU died on December 25, 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona.
