Preliminary Inventory of the Commission on the Status of Women Records

President Lattie F. Coor established Arizona State University's Commission on the Status of Women in 1991 following the release of the Arizona Board of Regents' report entitled Reaching the Vision: Women in Arizona's Universities in the Year 2000. The Commission's goal was to monitor and promote women's advancement in the areas of equity, career development, and climate at the University. In 1998, the Commission reported that 80% of the goals established in 1991 had been completed or were near completion. The Commission introduced a new strategic planning initiative in 2002 designed to focus on women's needs and issues in six priority areas: Climate and Culture, Accountability, Compensation and Resources, Voice and Visibility, Training and Development, and Safety. The Commission was originally composed of representatives from each employment category across all of ASU's campuses but was reorganized in 2004 as four campus level committees governed by an Executive Committee. Today, it continues to work to enhance the opportunities available to women at ASU.
