Historical Note
The Arizona Board of Regents' predecessor, the Board of Regents of the University of Arizona, was established to manage the University's affairs in 1901. The two state colleges, the Arizona State Teachers' College at Tempe and the Arizona State Teachers' College at Flagstaff, were governed by a State Board of Education composed of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and two members appointed by Arizona's Governor.
In March of 1945, Governor Sidney P. Osborn signed House Bill 136, which united the governing boards of Arizona's University and State Colleges as the Board of Regents of the University and State Colleges of Arizona.
After Arizona State College at Tempe became Arizona State University in 1958, the Board's name was changed to Board of Regents of the Universities and State College of Arizona.
The name was shortened to Arizona Board of Regents
in 1966.
The Board is composed of nine members appointed by the Governor and one student. The Governor and the Superintendent of Public Instruction are ex-offico members. The Board's responsibilities include setting tuition and fees, establishing the curriculum, managing employee benefit plans, defining admission qualifications, and enacting ordinances needed to govern the institutions in its jurisdiction.
