Scope and Content Note

This collection houses manuscripts; academic papers; speeches; graduate and undergraduate course materials including student papers, exams, and drafts and final copies of theses and dissertations; correspondence and other materials showing the Shanghai First International Conference on Communications (1985) and the NASA 1970 Engineering Systems Design Summer Faculty Fellowship; materials documenting the Golden Key National Honor Society, the International Communication Association, and the National Society for the Study of Communication; and research materials showing the development and implementation of the Goyer Organization of Ideas Test (GOIT). Robert Stanton Goyer was born to Clarence V. and Genevieve M. (Sober) Goyer in Kokomo, Indiana on October 7, 1923. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and again from 1952 to 1953. During his service, he earned the Bronze Star. Goyer earned his M.A. from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1950 and his PhD from Ohio State University in 1955.

Goyer began his professional career as an Instructor at Miami University (1949-1951). He accepted a position at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio in 1955. Here, he served as an Instructor and later as an Assistant Professor (1955-1958) and as a Research Associate (1956-1963). Goyer began teaching at Purdue University in 1958 as an Assistant Professor and was subsequently promoted to Associate Professor and finally to full Professor. In 1966, he moved to Ohio University in Athens, where he served as a Professor (1966-1981), as the Director of the Center for Communication Studies (1966-1974, 1979-1981), as the Associate Dean of the Graduate College (1978), and as the Dean of the Graduate College and Acting Director or Research (1979). Goyer came to Arizona State University in 1981 and served as a Professor in the Department of Communication (1981-1994) and as Department Chairman (1981-1989) until his retirement in 1994. He has been honored with emeritus status at both Ohio University and at Arizona State University.

Goyer married Patricia Ann Stutz (1926-) on August 12, 1950 and the couple had four daughters, Karen, Susan, Linda, and Amy.
