Historical Note

The Department of Art was authorized to grant its first degrees, the Master of Arts and the Master of Art History, in 1958. In 1965, the Department was transferred from the College of Liberal Arts to the College of Fine Arts. The Department moved into a new building in 1970 and became the School of Art in the 1980s. Today, the School retains a permanent faculty of approximately 50, grants Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, and boasts four exhibit spaces: the Northlight Gallery in Matthews Hall, the Harry Wood Gallery in the Art Building, and the Step Gallery and Gallery 100 in Tempe Center.
