Scope and Content Note

This collection houses correspondence, eligibility reports, minutes, financial statements, photographs, audio recordings, and other materials documenting Arizona State University's participation in the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and its successors, the Western Athletic Conference and the Pacific-10 Conference. This collection has not been processed in full and can be viewed only by appointment. Contact Archives and Special Collections for more information.

Conditions Governing Access

Box 1, folders 1-4 and 7-9 of accession #1994-01256 and boxes 3-11 of accession #1994-01257 are restricted and therefore unavailable to researchers. Confidential materials include student athlete eligibility reports protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

To view this collection, make an appointment at least five business days prior to your visit by contacting Ask an Archivist. Appointments in the Wurzburger Reading Room at Hayden Library (rm. 138) on the Tempe campus are available Tuesday through Thursday, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Historical Note

The Border Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was founded in 1931 with five charter members: University of Arizona, Arizona State Teachers' College at Flagstaff (now Northern Arizona University), Arizona State Teachers' College at Tempe (now Arizona State University), University of New Mexico, and New Mexico A & M (now New Mexico State University). Texas Tech was admitted in 1932 followed by Texas Mines (now the University of Texas at El Paso) in 1935 and West Texas State Teachers' College (now West Texas A & M) and Hardin-Simmons University in 1941. In 1961, the Border Conference was discontinued and Arizona State University became a charter member of the Western Athletic Conference. Other charter members included University of Arizona, Brigham Young University, University of New Mexico, University of Utah, and University of Wyoming. In 1978, Arizona State University became part of the Pacific-10 Conference, which became the Pacific-12 Conference in 2011.
