Series II: Correspondence

Series I: Arizona State University contains correspondence, notes, papers, and documents from Dr. Pyne’s tenure at Arizona State University from 1976-2008. It also includes various papers and correspondence from his doctoral program at the University of Texas, his time as an assistant professor of history at the University of Iowa and his subsequent job searches leading to his employment at ASU.

Series II: Correspondence contains personal, business, and general correspondence from 1980-2012. Subjects discussed include: speaking invitations, correspondence with colleagues around the world, research inquiries, personal notes, administrative matters related to university posts, professional development, etc.

Series III: Books, ranging from 1980-2019, contain correspondence between Professor Pyne and his colleagues, editors, and publishers, as well as excerpts from titles and book reviews. This Series chronologically begins with Dutton's Point (1982) and concludes with After Preservation (2014). The texts in this collection were written while Professor Stephen J. Pyne conducted research and taught at Arizona State University. These files showcase both the time and dedication Stephen Pyne spent with each title. His meticulous attention to detail and craft does not go unnoticed: publications such as Introduction to Wildland Fire (1984) span four years of revisions. Housing Professor Pyne's groundbreaking research on environmentalism, exploration, and the history of fire, publications in this series include The Ice: A Journey to Antarctica (1986), Fire on the Rim (1989), Vestal Fire (1997), and How the Canyon Became Grand (1998), among others. The timeline of Professor Pyne's publications informs us of, and gives context to, his active career in fire research. Series IV: Global Fire Research includes a compilation of correspondence, conference presentation materials, news articles, travel details, and field notes exploring the nature of fire on a worldwide scale. This series includes research beyond the University, and represents the public nature of Dr. Pyne’s research. The papers capture the later part of Dr. Pyne’s career, and fall within the years 1990-2000.

Series V: Projects contains materials related to publications, grant applications and awards, speaking engagements, and interviews for television and documentary films. Documents include correspondence with editors and event organizers, printed event programs, and copies of papers presented during the period from 1993-2008. High-profile projects include serving on the United Nations’ Fire Working Groups, providing Congressional Testimony, speaking at conferences such as the Andrus Center’s Fire Next Time conference, National Forest Service and National Parks Service conferences, and the International Wildland Fire Conference, National Humanities Center Fellowship, and the International Wildland Fire Conference, consulting with numerous news organizations such as the BBC, WGBH, CNN other media such as NOVA and History Channel.

Series VI: Journals and Other Papers houses handwritten research journals documenting Pyne's research in the Grand Canyon, Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, and India. Also included are notes for Flame and Fortune and information about one of Pyne's publishers, Gerard McCauley Agency, Inc.
