Scope and Content Note
Series I: Alphabetical Office Files consists of 66.5 boxes (representing the bulk of the collection) containing newsclippings, maps, printed matter, lecture texts, student research papers, and other research materials documenting many geographic, historical, and agricultural topics in Arizona and the southwest.
Series II: Photographs consists of 4 sub-series. Sub-Series A: J. W. Hoover Collection consists of 1 box of 72 photographs depicting Native Americans (including the Papago, Hopi, and Navajo peoples), the San Xavier Mission, and Arizona landscapes taken by Dr. J. W. Hoover, who worked at Arizona State University as a Professor of Geography from 1927 to 1944. Sub-Series B: L. C. Post Collection consists of 1.5 boxes of 143 photographs taken by Dr. Lauren C. Post of San Diego State University while on a trip to Mexico in 1931. These images depict people and scenes in several Mexican towns including Sonora, Bacaoachi, Arizpe, Santa Cruz, Sinoquipe, and an area Dr. Post describes as Cananea.
Sub-Series C: Stock Photos consists of a .5 box containing 38 photos of Bisbee and Clifton-Morenci taken by the Phelps Dodge Corporation. Also included are images of Native American life and scenes of Arizona tourist destinations and the Phoenix area taken by the Arizona Office of Tourism. Sub-Series D: Negatives and Miscellaneous Photos consists of a .5 box containing 67 photographs and negatives taken between 1932 and 1933. Several subjects have been identified in this sub-series, including Pima Indian dwellings, Hopi Indians and the Hopi Snake Dance, the Salt River Valley, Sacaton, Arizona, the Apache Trail, and Fish Creek, Arizona.
Series III: Book Manuscript consists of 1 box of maps, edited draft manuscript pages, and a bound copy of Dr. Comeaux's Arizona: A Geography.
Series IV: Dept. of Geography Files consists of 1.5 boxes of files from the Arizona State University Department of Geography dating from 1927 to 1993. In addition to faculty files, department meeting minutes, financial records, and correspondence, there are several folders of original classroom materials, academic writings, and publications by Dr. J. W. Hoover.
