Scope and Content Note

The Office of the President Records of Arizona State University consist of records received from six principals and six presidents of Arizona State University and predecessor institutions, including the Arizona Territorial Normal School, Tempe Normal School, Arizona State Teacher's College and Arizona State college. The collection also includes personal papers and research materials collected and compiled by the University Archives staff.

The records of Normal School principals Hiram Bradford Farmer, Robert Lindley Long and Dayton Alonzo Reed are largely comprised of biographical information compiled for the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Arizona State Teacher's College in 1935. Some personal correspondence and publications are interfiled with the research materials.

The records of Edgar L. Storment are primarily family correspondence dating from 1863-1900. Included are additional biographical research materials and some original administrative memoranda and correspondence.

James A. McNaughton and Joseph Warren Smith records also consist of biographical research files and some original administrative memoranda and correspondence from 1895-1902.

Arthur John Matthews records include administrative and personal correspondence, records of the school curriculum committee and materials concerning legislative appropriations and legislation of college status.

The Ralph W. Swetman series includes early correspondence on accreditation by the North Central Association of colleges and Secondary Schools and on intercollegiate athletics.

Records of Grady Gammage comprise the most complete collection of early presidential records. The files are arranged alphabetically by keyword and/or folder title and they include administrative and personal documents describing the wide range of Gammage's interest and activities from 1916-1960.

A large portion of the files are devoted to Gammage's work for various educational organizations, including the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE), the American Council on Education and the Arizona State Board of Education. The relationship between Gammage and the Arizona Board of Regents and the Arizona State Legislature is well-documented in his papers.

A series of files grouped under the folder title heading Buildings describes contracting, construction and implementation of a major portion of the university's buildings, many of which are still used today. Special folder series documenting consideration of the proposed medical school and the drive to achieve university status are grouped under the terms Medical School and Name Change. Gammage's speeches and public presentations are listed under Professional Organizations, Speech Material and Speeches.

Records of H. D. Richardson are mostly comprised of speeches and public presentations from 1953-1981. Included are Richardson's Bachelors and Masters theses, his dissertation and some correspondence.

The G. Homer Durham series contains a substantial quantity of administrative correspondence as well as personal papers. The volumes are listed alphabetically by folder title and/or keyword. A significant quantity of Durham's speeches and presentations are compiled in volumes listed under Addresses, Essays, Lectures. Records relating to Durham's work with the Arizona Board of Regents includes substantial information on budgeting and planning for branch campuses. A large quantity of files document Durham's work with Associated Students of ASU.

Information regarding construction and use of campus facilities can be found under the heading Buildings. Volumes containing information on proposals to establish or expand degree programs are filed under Degrees. Substantial quantities of information on the proposed Litchfield College and the Motorola Executive Institute are also included among Durham's files. Six volumes of Durham's papers are associated with the Western Athletic Conference.

The Harry K. Newburn records include administrative files, personal papers and biographical information. Newburn's papers include information on the Bureau of Broadcasting (KAET-TV), Intercollegiate Athletics and issues related to Student Affairs and student conduct. Four volumes of his public presentations and speeches are compiled under Speeches.

John W. Schwada's papers are almost entirely comprised of administrative correspondence and memoranda. Large portions of his records are devoted to the ASU Alumni Association, the Arizona Board of Regents and the Arizona State Legislature (grouped under Legislature). Information on KAET-TV is located under Bureau of Broadcasting and Television Station KAET. Four volumes of Schwada's papers concern the Fiesta Bowl. Schwada's public presentations and speeches are grouped under Speaking Engagements. Seven volumes of papers document Sun Devil Weekend activities.
