This collection houses 10 scrapbooks and 20 library clip envelopes containing some 2,000 clippings documenting Frank Smothers' career with the Chicago Daily News. Also included is a scrapbook housing several dozen stories written by A. T. Steele in China in the late 1930s.

Biographical Note
Frank Albert Smothers (1901-1981) graduated from Northwestern University and joined the Chicago Daily News in 1925. After several years on the city staff, Smothers served as a foreign correspondent in England, France, China, and Japan and covered the Spanish Civil War. He is best known for his coverage of gangland violence in the 1920s and his reporting during World War II in both Europe and Asia. Smothers was expelled from Italy during Benito Mussolini's dictatorship but went on to report from both Berlin and the Pacific Theater. In 1942, he joined the Chicago Sun as an editorial page editor and columnist. He also co-authored Report on the Greeks after covering the Greek Civil War in the late 1940s.
