Scope and Content Note

The Shaaron and Ron Cosner Papers consist primarily of materials written by Shaaron Cosner including newspaper articles, periodical articles, books, and correspondence. Also included is some correspondence from Ron Cosner and information about the book he wrote. The collection had been divided into four series.

Series I: Shaaron Cosner's Articles includes articles from local newspapers such as the Arizona Republic and magazines such as Early American Life and Americana. Series II: Shaaron Cosner's Books includes research, contracts, correspondence, drafts, and other materials documenting Cosner's book-length projects. Published books include American Windmills: Harnessers of Energy (1977), American Cowgirls: Yesterday and Today (1978), Masks Around the World, and How to Make Them (1979), Be Your Own Weather Forecaster (1981), The Light Bulb (1984), Paper Through the Ages (1984), Special Effects in Movies and TV (1985), Rubber (1986), War Nurses (1988), Lunar Bases (1990), Dinosaur Dinners (1991), and The Underground Railroad (1991); her unpublished works are titled American Monasteries, Asthma, Parker Brothers, and How Animals Sleep. Series III: Ron Cosner's Book includes all draft materials and correspondence concerning Football's Pro-I Offense. Series IV: Shaaron and Ron Cosner's Correspondence includes communications about plagiarism, rejection letters and notes, letters to publishers and agents, and other materials from 1972-1990.

Biographical Note

Author and teacher Shaaron Cosner was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on February 10, 1940 to Roy F. and Louise Bigelow. She grew up moving and living on Air Force bases in Germany, the Philippines, Italy, and various states in the United States. She married Ron Cosner on March 3, 1962. She earned her B.A. in English from Arizona State University in 1965 and worked for the city of Tempe as an instructor for magazine article writing while working on a Master's degree in English, which she completed in 1978. It was also during this time she began freelance writing in 1974. She went on to work as an instructor at Arizona State University (1979-1982) and as a teacher at Corona del Sol (1982-circa 1990) while writing eight books.

Ron Cosner was born in 1940 in the Charleroi, Pennsylvania area. Frank Kush recruited him to play football for Arizona State University, where he met and married Shaaron Bigelow. He played football all four years of his undergraduate degree and graduated with his B.A. in Business in 1963. Cosner completed his Master's of Arts in Business Education in 1965 and worked at McClintock High School for eight years as Assistant Coach before being tapped to be Head Coach at Marcos de Niza. The teams he coached up to 1979 had 37-26-1 record and he led his teams to two consecutive championships in 1973 and 1974. By 1988, Ron had taught for twenty-five years in the Tempe Union High School District. He and Shaaron have two children, Bob and Vikki, as well as three grandchildren.

Abstract

This collection contains news articles, periodical articles, book drafts, and correspondence created by authors Shaaron and Ron Cosner during the couple's time in Arizona (1965-1990).

Arrangement

This collection consists of twenty-nine boxes divided into four series:

  1. Series I: Shaaron Cosner's Articles
  2. Series II: Shaaron Cosner's Books
  3. Series III: Ron Cosner's Book
  4. Series IV: Shaaron and Ron Cosner's Correspondence

Provenance

Shaaron Cosner donated these papers to Arizona State University between 1980 and 2000 (Accession #2003-03084, #2003-03052, #2003-03047, #2003-03016, #2003-02927, and #2003-02854).
