Historical Note
The idea for the Arizona Alliance for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education began with several professors at Northern Arizona University in the spring of 1985. These professors made contact with colleagues at the three State Universities, Grand Canyon College (now Grand Canyon University), and school districts across the state to gauge interest in such an alliance. The concept proved popular, and the group met later that year to continue the discussion. The Arizona Department of Education sponsored a subsequent luncheon meeting for supporters of the nascent Alliance, at which time Dr. Fred Staley of Arizona State University was selected Interim Chair.
Discussion continued after this gathering and a show-down
meeting was set for early August, at which time the vote to form the Alliance was taken and the group was officially formed. Nine Board members were nominated and confirmed: Ray Hagelberg (Northern Arizona University), Ray Tamppari (Northern Arizona University), Jean Fitzgerald (Phoenix College), Susan Sprague (Mesa Unified School District), Kay Dean (Arizona Department of Education), Michael Lang (Arizona Department of Education) Charles Y. Hoyt (Arizona Council of Engineering and Scientific Associations), Fred Staley (Arizona State University), and Sherry Baca (Prescott Junior High School). The organization's goals were to:
- Build partnerships between educators, businesspersons, and civic leaders
- Link teachers to resource persons, training and curricular information, learning materials, and needed equipment
- Describe and assist in providing appropriate learning experiences
- Assist in updating and renewing teachers use of appropriate curriculum and effective teaching practices
- Encourage students to become involved in mathematics and science activities and events
- Provide, to interested students, opportunities for competition and development in mathematics and science
- Achieve awareness for the educational and growth needs of thousands of teachers
- Participate in making relevant public policy
During subsequent meetings, the Board created the Alliance's first Constitution and Bylaws in addition to establishing a small treasury through each Board member's donation of $15. The organization was an early sponsor of the Arizona Science Olympiad and also worked with the State Science Bowl. The Arizona Alliance for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education was formally dissolved in April of 2005.
