Historical Note
The Grand Canyon (Arizona) Chapter of the Sierra Club was formed in 1965, at which time the organization concentrated on opposing dams in the Grand Canyon. The Chapter later expanded into such related issues as protecting public lands and watershed restoration and conservation through programs like the Restore and Protect the Grand Canyon Ecoregion project and the Water Sentinels program, which is designed to protect the Verde and San Pedro rivers. The Chapter's current priorities include promoting energy efficiency and the production and use of renewable energy; restoring and protecting the Grand Canyon and the Grand Canyon ecoregion; protecting Arizona's public lands, water resources, riparian areas, native wildlife, and border region; and lobbying the Arizona State Legislature in the interests of environmental protection.
