Historical Note
The 158th Regimental Combat Team (a unit of the Arizona National Guard) was organized as the 1st Arizona Volunteer Infantry in late 1865. The unit was called into Federal service on September 16, 1940 and sent to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for training. In February of 1941, the 158th was moved to Camp Barkley, Texas and later undertook manoeuvres in Louisiana. After Pearl Harbor, the unit was sent to Panama for training in jungle warfare and to guard the Panama Canal. During this time, the 158th adopted the deadly Bushmaster snake as their logo. In January of 1943, the unit was moved to Brisbane, Australia, where it was incorporated into the 6th Army. It went on to fight in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands and was sent to Japan at the end of the war. It was deactivated at Utsunomiya, Japan on January 17, 1946.
