Historical Note

The Roosevelt Irrigation District's predecessor was established in August of 1921 when the Salt River Valley Water Users Association signed a contract with the Carrick and Mangham Agua Fria Land and Irrigation Company under which the company agreed to pump no less than 70,000 acre-feet per year of water from an area northeast of Tolleson in order to relieve waterlogging. The Roosevelt Irrigation District was formed in 1923 and all of the provisions of the contract were assumed by the District. The contract was modified and amplified in 1927. In 2015, the District used 50 miles of main canals and 185 miles of lateral canals (mostly lined with concrete) to transport both groundwater and reclaimed water to customers in the West Valley and southwest Phoenix.
