Scope and Content Note

The materials in this collection reflect Boyd's interests in meteorology and science. Of note are Boyd's research notebooks, which contain detailed descriptions of his meteorite site visits and findings, and a manuscript copy (including original notes and corrections) of Boyd's Autoradiography for Biology and Medicine. This manuscript was published in 1955 under the title Autoradiography in Biology and Medicine. Also included are two research reports and several research proposals, including a proposal to travel to the Sahara Desert in West Africa near Chinguetti, Mauritania in order to find an 800,000 ton mass reported to be there. The report contains copies of correspondence as well as a detailed plan, budget, and outline for the trip. These records are arranged alphabetically.

Biographical Note

George Addison Boyd was born in Texas in 1907. He earned a bachelor's degree from Austin College in Sherman, Texas and a master's degree from Iowa State. After arriving at Arizona State College (now known as Arizona State University) in 1954, he played an important role in developing a research program at the college where he later earned the title of Coordinator of Research.

In 1956, Boyd launched a bid to obtain a two-year medical college for the campus but his plan was rejected. In 1967, he became the Associate Director of the Center for Meteorite Studies. He was influential in bringing Dr. H. H. Nininger's world famous meteorite collection to campus. He was married to Consuelo P. Boyd, a teacher, translator, columnist and writer. George A. Boyd died in 1991.

Custodial History

George A. Boyd's wife, Consuelo P. Boyd, donated these records to the Arizona Historical Foundation between 1994 and 1996.

Provenance

The Arizona Historical Foundation transferred these materials to the Arizona Collection in 2012.
