Biographical Note

Susan E. Gray is an Associate Professor of United States History at Arizona State University. A nineteenth-century historian, her research interests include race, gender, and internal migration with particular emphasis on the trans-Appalachian West. Gray's major publications include The Yankee West: Community Life on the Michigan Frontier (1996) and a co-edited book, The American Midwest: Essays on Regional History (2002). She is currently working on Lines of Decent: Mixed-Race Family Histories from the North Country and Great Lakes Frontier: Michigan, 1650-1920.

Professor Gray has received fellowships from the NEH and the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University in addition to serving as a visiting professor at the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the Free University of Berlin. Gray also co-edits Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies.

Provenance

Susan E. Gray, Associate Professor of History at Arizona State University, donated these papers to the Arizona Collection. Further materials will be created in Historical Inquiry: The Overland Trail (Course #300) and Southwestern Women's History (Course #498) and will be received in a number of accessions over time.
