This collection houses notes, correspondence, calendars, photographs, video and audio tapes, maps, posters, newspaper clippings, and other materials documenting the United Nations Nairobi Womens' Conference, the Phoenix Indian School, the Phoenix Commission on the Status of Women, the Desert Cities Task Force Mayors' Conference, Senator John McCain, and Claire Sargent's political campaigns. Biographical Note
Claire King was born to John B. and Almyra Hogan King in Jackson, Mississippi on January 10, 1934. She began her college education at the Mississippi College for Women, transferred to Millsaps College, and graduated in 1956. After graduation, King began working for an advertising agency in Jackson and moved to New York City when her firm opened an office in 1957. She married in 1958 and had three children. She later divorced her husband and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where she married childhood friend Henry Sargent. In 1992, Claire Sargent ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate against John McCain. The experience inspired her to write her autobiography, Journey Proud.
