Biographical Note
Jonathan Marshall was born in New York City in 1924. He received his Bachelor's degree in economics and political science from the University of Colorado. After working for a time with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation at Boulder City, Nevada, he worked as a city planner. Marshall purchased the magazine Arts Digest in 1953, changed its title to Arts and managed the publication for five years. In 1958 he entered the University of Oregon in order to complete his Masters degree in journalism.
Marshall moved to Arizona in 1963 and began his career as editor and publisher of the Scottsdale Daily Progress. In 1972 Marshall was elected president of the Arizona Newspaper Association. He also served as chairman of the ANA Legislative and Freedom of Information Committees.
Jonathan Marshall has been active in a number of civic groups. He has served on the boards of Camelback Hospital, the Phoenix Urban League and the Phoenix Symphony, as well as on the national executive board of the American Jewish Committee. He has also served on the Scottsdale Boys Club advisory board and is an active member of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce. Marshall lives in Scottsdale with his wife Maxine and is the father of four children.
