Biographical Note

Dorothy Dottie Virginia (Gorrell) Gilbert was born to Walter Albro Clifford and Virginia M. (Nesbitt) Gorrell in Cleveland, Ohio on April 8, 1915. As a child, she displayed an affinity for horses and took every opportunity to ride and work toward owning a horse. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1936 and wrote for Time and Newsweek magazines before marrying Arizona native Elbert Roy Gilbert (1911-1996) in 1941. The couple had three sons, Donald, Roger, and Terry.

The Gilbert family settled in Phoenix in 1953, where Dottie Gilbert wrote Hoofbeats for the Phoenix Gazette and edited the Arizona Horseman (1963-1968). She later became extensively involved with the Phoenix Mountains Preservation Council (formed in 1971), which over the course of 30 years established the 7,000 acre Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Dottie Gilbert died in Phoenix on December 7, 1997.
