Historical Note
The United Bank of Arizona, a commercial bank supervised by the FDIC, was established on March 7, 1960. It eventually grew to include 40 offices around Arizona. Union Bancorp of Los Angeles acquired the United Bank of Arizona in 1987 after the state passed legislation allowing out-of-state banks to acquire Arizona banks. Citicorp bought Union Bancorp in 1988 and merged it with its Citibank Arizona, creating the fourth-largest bank in the nation with assets of about $3.3 billion.
