Preliminary Inventory of the Miller and Kerby Family Papers
Scope and Content Note
This collection houses business records, correspondence, photographs, military records, financial records, yearbooks, publications, and teaching materials documenting the Miller and Kerby families. Subjects represented include Joseph and Estella (Daniels) Kerby’s business interests in Phoenix, George Miller Jr.’s work at Thunderbird Field during World War II and subsequent career as a pilot and educator, and Muriel (Kerby) Miller’s career as a high school English teacher.

Biographical Note
George Westcott Miller Jr. was born to George Westcott Miller (1889-1963) and Evelyn Perry (Fox) Miller (1895-1989) in Phoenix, Arizona on November 27, 1915. He attended Osborne, Emerson, and Kenilworth grade schools before graduating from Phoenix Union High School (1933) and Phoenix Junior College (1935) and completing his B.A. at the University of Arizona (1937). Miller married Muriel Kerby on June 30, 1941 and the couple had one son, Kerby Alonzo (1944-).
During World War II, Miller served as a flight instructor and commanded squadrons 5 and 6 at Thunderbird Field #2. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and went on to work as a pilot for TWA and as the assistant general manager of the Butane Corporation. Miller returned to school in the 1950s, earning his M.A. in Education (1957) and Education Specialist Degree (1959) from Arizona State University. He worked as a teacher, counselor, and administrator in the Phoenix High School system for 25 years before moving to Columbia, Missouri. George Miller died on March 4, 2004.
Muriel (Kerby) Miller was born to Joseph Thomas (1872-1948) and Estella (Daniels) Kerby (1877-1976) in Moberly, Missouri on January 20, 1916. The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1930, where Muriel Kerby graduated from Phoenix Union High School (1933) and Phoenix Junior College (1935) before earning her B.A. from the University of Arizona and her M.A. from Arizona State University. She taught English at Phoenix Union High School and North High School from 1937 until retiring in 1982. Muriel Miller died in Columbia, Missouri on November 28, 1999.
