Scope and Content Note

Series I: Arizona includes materials used and collected by Jack Pfister during his research on Arizona history, politics, and other topics.

Series II: Cultural Diversity – Minority Recruiting/Retention includes materials used and collected by Jack Pfister while working in academia and specifically at Arizona State University.

Series III: People of Interest includes materials used and collected by Jack Pfister during his research, writing, and speaking about Arizona's political history.

Series IV: Publications includes materials used and collected by Jack Pfister during his research. Among these materials are dissertations/theses, journal articles/news letters, reports, and works by Pfister. Due to poor reproduction, photocopies of the St. John's Herald and Apache Review dated 1886 to 1892 were discarded during processing.

Series V: Miscellaneous includes other materials used by Jack Pfister during his work researching, writing, and speaking about Arizona's political history.

Biographical Note

Alfred John Jack Pfister was born to Alfred John and Roberta Marie (McDonald) Pfister in Prescott, Arizona on October 3, 1933. With degrees in engineering and law from the University of Arizona, Pfister began his career as a lawyer in a Phoenix law firm where he represented the Salt River Project. In 1970, he joined SRP full time, becoming general manager six years later.

Pfister has served on the boards of many community organizations, including Phoenix Forty; Arizona Board of Regents' Arizona Town Hall; Flynn Foundation; Arizona Humanities Council; and Arizona Historical Society. He served, under several Arizona governors, on commissions involving growth and water issues.

Pfister served Arizona State University as President of the ASU Research Park, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, and professor in the School of Public Affairs. He died in Phoenix, Arizona on June 20, 2009 and was survived by his wife Patricia, his daughter Suzanne, and his son Scott.

Abstract

This collection houses research files, articles, reports, publications, notebooks, and other materials documenting Jack Pfister's research on Arizona history (including politics, famous persons, water resource development, Mormon pioneers, and Arizona statehood) and work with minority student recruitment and retention at Arizona State University.

Arrangement

This collection consists of nineteen boxes divided into five series:

  4. Series IV: Publications
  5. Series V: Miscellaneous
