Scope and Content Note
This photograph album consists primarily of snapshots showing student life at Arizona State Teachers College (now Arizona State University) from 1930 to 1931, including views of campus and such aspects of student life as track meets, football games, homecomings, Alpha Hall dormitory for men, and students. Also included are pictures taken during car trips around the state showing landscapes and scenes in Bisbee, Prescott, Flagstaff, Tucson, and Ray. A few photographs of Ray were taken during the 1920s and depict members of the Bartell family and their friends.

Biographical Note
The photographs in this album were taken by Eric Helge Bartell. Bartell was born to Finnish immigrants Erick S. and Lyda (Carlson) Bartell on August 19, 1905 in Iron Belt, Wisconsin. He was one of three children, including Edith Sophia (Bartell) Curtis (1907-1964) and Elsie Mary (1911-1973). The family moved to Ray, Arizona, where Erick S. Bartell worked in a copper mine, between 1911 and 1920. Helge Bartell attended Arizona State Teachers' College in Tempe (now Arizona State University) and graduated with a B.A. in Education in 1932. After World War II, he worked as a blacksmith for the Raymond Concrete Pile Company in Liberia. Helge Bartell drowned on December 19, 1946 while swimming about 100 yards north of the Company's camp in Monrovia during his free time.
