Scope and Content Note
This collection houses materials documenting professional and personal aspects of the academic career of an Arizona State University History Department faculty member. It is organized in seven series.
Series I: Published Articles and Manuscripts and Series II: Book Reviews contain printed articles, manuscripts, and book reviews regarding Arizona and Civil War topics. Series III: Lectures and Speeches houses manuscripts of speeches on a variety of topics in both page form and on reference note cards. Of particular interest are addresses given upon the death of President Eisenhower and on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, including a letter from Senator Edward Kennedy expressing the family's appreciation for the University's convocation. Series IV: Correspondence shows the publication of encyclopedia articles on Arizona. Also included are personal letters that Hubbard wrote to his mother and brother containing commentary on History Department and University affairs from 1967 to 1972. Series VI: Miscellaneous includes a file of newsclippings on the Holsinger murder case, which involved an ASU student that Hubbard taught. Also included is a biographical file and an oral history interview given on the occasion of Hubbard's retirement in 1990. Series VII: Research Files contains materials collected on Darrell Duppa, a pioneer Arizonan who allegedly named Phoenix and Tempe, and miscellaneous research note cards.

Biographical Note
Paul Gaylord Hubbard was born in Virginia, Minnesota on August 6, 1921. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wabash College (Crawfordsville, Ind.) and a Master of Arts and a PhD in history from the University of Illinois. In 1950, he joined the faculty of Arizona State College at Tempe as an Assistant Professor of History and in 1959 advanced to Professor in the newly named Arizona State University. His chief scholarly fields of specialization were twentieth century American history, the American Civil War, and Arizona. He held such administrative positions as Chair of the Department of History, Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and Acting Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. Upon his retirement, he served two years as Executive Vice President of the Arizona Historical Foundation. Hubbard died on April 14, 2007.
