Scope and Content Note

The Cleve W. Van Dyke Papers contain a diary, correspondence, holograph balloting tabulations, and voluminous financial records identifying land uses and users in the township of Miami, Arizona from 1913 to 1960. This collection is divided into six series.

Series I: Arizona Silver Belt contains financial records documenting the business transactions of a newspaper publishing enterprise dating from 1933 to 1960.

Series II: Miami Trust Company contains financial records showing the business of a real estate enterprise from 1932 to 1949. Box 6, Folder 8 houses correspondence from this institution.

Series III: Miami Townsite Enterprises houses rental accounts ledgers for the town dating from 1915 to 1943. These ledgers list tenants and give an indication of their business purposes. Box 18, Folder 4 contains an analysis of the firm's changing cash flow from 1920 to 1924.

Series IV: Van Dyke Copper Company contains the company's ledger for the years 1917 to 1931 and its cash disbursements journal for 1931 to 1957. Box 26, Folder 2 contains a sequence of time cards for casual labor for the years 1926 to 1931; Folder 3 houses quarterly trial balances for a twelve month period spanning 1946 and 1947.

Series V: Miscellaneous Financial Records contains financial records for Van Dyke's smaller business holdings. This series dates from 1910 to 1940.

Series VI: Miscellaneous Papers contains a diary, holograph balloting tabulations, and printed matter dating from 1915 to 1957. Box 27, Folder 6 and Folder 6/OV hold the return reports for the Arizona and Gila County primary election of 1920.

Biographical Note

Cleve William Van Dyke was born to Chester B. and Bertha C. (Solum) Van Dyke on May 17, 1875. He married Ida England (1874-1955) and the couple had one daughter, Edith Claire (1912-). Cleve Van Dyke, his wife, and his brother Leslie Donovan Van Dyke (1890-1938) were the major shareholders in a network of corporations that owned the town of Miami, Arizona, published its newspaper, and operated mines and farms in its vicinity during the first half of the 20th century. Cleve Van Dyke was appointed to the Arizona Copper Traffic Commission in 1920 and was a member of an Arizona delegation that visited the White House in 1925 to discuss a controversy over Colorado River water use. Cleve Van Dyke died in Los Angeles, California on December 20, 1945.

Provenance

The Cleve W. Van Dyke Papers were received from Professor Ross Rice and Mary Powers in 1975 and from Nancy Busch in 1977 (ACC# 1975-0083 and ACC# 1977-0083).
