Research 1974
Scope and Content Note
The Jonathan Marshall Papers are composed of correspondence, newsclippings, printed matter, computer printouts, and notebooks documenting Marshall's campaign for the United States Senate in 1974. The collection has been arranged in two series.
Series I: Subject Files contains a variety of materials discussing subjects identified by Marshall or a member of his staff. The files were originally arranged alphabetically by subject; this arrangement has been preserved and restored when necessary. Materials are arranged chronologically within the folders. Some materials are duplicated in different files and some types of information are found in two or more subject files. For example, information on the Watergate scandal can be found under Impeachment, Watergate, and Press Releases.
There are a number of items of particular interest in this series. The candidacy announcement material (Box 1, Folders 18-19) includes copies of Marshall's financial disclosure statements. Contributions (Box 2, Folders 6-7) contains alphabetical lists of campaign contributors. The directories (Box 2, Folder 27) are actually lists of members of the Arizona Democratic Party. Energy (Box 3, Folder 3) features information on coal gasification technology. The Indians file (Box 3, Folder 13) includes Marshall's address to the Navajo Tribal Council. The position papers (Box 4, Folder 13) also contain some copies of press releases. The reading files (Box 5, Folders 1-7) consist of carbon copies of a variety of letters, press releases, and public statements apparently submitted for Marshall's review and approval. The file concerning Joe Rothstein (Box 5, Folder 9) contains agreements and correspondence documenting the relationship between Marshall and Rothstein, his media consultant. Rowan Group, Inc. (Box 5, Folder 10) includes the results of a telephone survey conducted for Marshall by this market research firm. Senior Citizens (Box 6, Folder 1) includes a 1972 platform document for the Gray Panthers political and social movement. Whistle Stop (Box 6, Folder 17) was a newspaper-like publication released at the time of Marshall's candidacy announcement that provides a brief overview of Marshall's background and his opinions on the issues.
Series II: Miscellaneous Materials houses notebooks, computer printouts, information packets, newsclippings, and audiovisual materials. The Use of Hand Written Postcards
typescript (Box 7, Folder 4) is a short document describing how postcards were used to garner support for the Marshall campaign. The Pretentious Idea
(Box 7, Folder 7) is a post-election published critique of journalism in Arizona. The Congressional Candidate Packet (Box 7, Folder 8) contains a series of publications by Common Cause regarding the ethics of elected officials.
