Scope and Content Note

From the collection:

The Concerned Citizens Against Rio Salado Records, 1976-1987, contain correspondence, reports, agreements, newsclippings, and election material. Although the collection ranges from 1976 to 1987, the bulk of the records concern the period between 1983 and 1987.

The Correspondence file includes correspondence both supporting and opposing the Rio Salado project. These letters include an undated communication from Councilman Dr. Bill Parks stating his reasons for changing his position to oppose the project and a letter from the No Landfill Committee to Mayor Goddard dated 1987 September 12 stating their position on dumping waste in the river bed.

The Reports, Agreements, Planning Documents file contains a report by the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce Task Force, flood reports by the Water Resources Associates, and an information guide titled The Ten Most Asked Questions published by the Rio Salado Development District. Also included is a report to the Phoenix City Council by the Rio Salado District responding to questions raised by Councilman Parks.

The Election Materials File includes a Rio Salado fact sheet showing charts of figures for costs, mileage, and tax calculations, a tax authorization measure sheet, election fliers, and a newsletter from the League of Women Voters of the Sun Cities discussing the Rio Salado project.

The Pamphlets and Printed Matter file contains pamphlets both for and against the Rio Salado project.

The Miscellaneous file includes a news release concerning the Libertarian opposition to the Rio Salado project and a publication of Citizens for Rio Salado.
