Abstract

The George B. Sanford Collection includes a journal transcript, correspondence, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook, financial records, and printed matter. Although the collection extends from 1861 to 1908, the bulk of the material concerns Sanford's command of Fort McDowell and his participation in the Indian Wars against the Apache in Arizona from 1866 to 1871.

Scope and Content Note From the collection: This artificial collection contains 45 sterographs, 8 boudoir, 4 cabinet, 3 cartes-de-visite, and 8 other photographic prints dating from the nineteenth century. Among the subjects depicted are the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest, and other scenic landscapes; Native Americans, pueblos, and ruins; buildings and street scenes in Tucson, Prescott, and other cities; and mining and mining communities.
